Nanotechnology at the frontline of infectious disease research
Cnr Nano showcased nano-enabled solutions at the 3rd INF-ACT Annual Meeting, highlighting advanced approaches for rapid diagnostics and innovative therapeutic strategies against emerging infectious threats.

From 17 to 20 November, the 3rd annual meeting of the INF-ACT project took place in Rome. INF-ACT brings together a national network of over 70 universities, research institutes, IRCCS, zooprophylactic institutes, and companies, united in addressing emerging infectious diseases through a One Health approach.

 

The meeting was attended by Cnr President, Andrea Lenzi, and the Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci, highlighting the project’s scientific and societal relevance. The event coincided with the World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, with 18 November marking the global day dedicated to raising awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR), often defined as a silent and imminent pandemic.

 

Cnr Nano actively participated in the meeting with a team of researchers from the Modena and Pisa units, presenting five posters and showcasing the institute’s commitment to advanced nanotechnology-based solutions in the fight against infectious diseases.

Key research highlights included:

  • Nanoparticle Systems for Biosensing and Lab-on-Chip Development for Rapid West Nile Virus Detection (by G.Brancolini, M. Cecchini, A. Sgarbossa, M. Gagliardi, L. Pucci in collaboration with Università di Padova and  Cnr-IC)
  • Investigation of phosphorene as an innovative therapeutic platform against antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens (by A. Sgarbossa, G. Brancolini, G. Amendola, F. Soofivand, A. Papalini in collaboration with  Cnr-ICCOM, Università di Pisa, and Scuola Normale Superiore)

 

These contributions demonstrate Cnr Nano’s engagement in cutting-edge research on both new antibacterial therapies and rapid diagnostic technologies for emerging viral threats, reflecting the institute’s ongoing commitment to addressing pressing public health challenges.
