Gaetano Scamarcio is the new Director of Cnr Nano
We are pleased to announce that the Institute of Nanoscience has a new Director, Gaetano Scamarcio, a renowned expert in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
We are pleased to announce that Gaetano Scamarcio is the new Director of the Istituto nanoscienze of National Reserach Council (Cnr Nano). His appointment, approved by the CNR Board of Directors on May 16th, is now officially in effect. Scamarcio, a renowned expert in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology, succeeds Lucia Sorba, who has led the institute since its founding in 2010. Gaetano Scamarcio is a Full Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Bari, specializing in research in optoelectronics and photonics. He holds a degree in Physics and a PhD from the Department of Physics at the University of Bari. He was a visiting scientist at the prestigious Bell Laboratories, USA, from 1994 to 1996, in 1997, and in 2000. From 1989 to 1990, he was a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart. In 1991, he was a guest scientist at the Walter Schottky Institute in Munich, and in 2006, he was a visiting professor at the University of Paris 7 "Denis Diderot". His studies have earned him international recognition, including the Italian Physical Society’s Award for Scientific Excellence and the Rotary Alumni Global Service Award from the International Rotary Foundation. He is also a member of the Committee of Experts for the National Research Program (PNR 2021-2027), where he contributed to defining the roadmap for Quantum Technologies in Area 4 – Digitalization, Industry, and Aerospace. An expert in the study, development, and technological applications of photonic devices based on nanotechnology, Scamarcio is notably a pioneer of quantum cascade superlattice lasers, revolutionary devices that have paved the way for ultra-sensitive chemical analysis of gas traces, for which he is a co-inventor and patent holder. He is also involved in multidisciplinary research on bio-functionalized interfaces capable of detecting extremely low concentrations of biomarkers relevant to biomedical diagnostics, down to the physical limit of a single molecule. He has collaborated on innovation and technology transfer activities that have led to the creation of prototypes based on the results of academic and industrial research. “It is a privilege for me to lead an institute of excellence like Cnr Nano, which has a strong leadership in crucial areas of nanoscience, the result of years of high-quality research and significant contributions to the global scientific community,” says Gaetano Scamarcio. Scamarcio describes his clear and bold vision for the future of the Institute of Nanoscience: “We will strive to further consolidate our expertise and international collaborations, with the goal of developing innovative technologies that will have a significant impact on society. Guided by excellence and a passion for discovery, we want to foster a stimulating and inclusive research environment where talents from all backgrounds can collaborate to tackle global challenges and improve the quality of life through science and technology”. We extend our warmest wishes to Gaetano Scamarcio for success in his new role, confident that his leadership will guide the Institute to new heights. Finally, the entire Nano Institute wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the outgoing Director, Lucia Sorba, for her commitment and dedication during her tenure. Under her leadership, the institute has achieved significant milestones and has grown not only in terms of scientific productivity but also in international visibility and relevance. Her unwavering commitment to promoting research programs in emerging fields, such as quantum materials physics and nanoelectronics, and in training young researchers, has left a legacy that will continue to inspire our scientific community.
