Research interests

My main research activity is about the physics of low dimensional materials. By utilizing Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and other surface analysis techniques we investigate surface phenomena applications oriented (hydrogen storage, defect characterization, surface functionalization, metal intercalation) mainly in graphene and functionalized graphene. Recently we have developed a sophisticated thermometric technique able to detect the heat released during the hydrogen loading of a sub-nanogram amount of hydrogen in a nanogram size sample.

Biographical sketch

Stefano Veronesi got his degree in Physics in 1987 from University of Pisa (Italy) in the research group of Prof. P. Minguzzi on the Laser spectroscopy of liquids in the Far InfraRed region.

1989 grant at Istituto di Fisica Atomica e Molecolare (Atomic and Molecular physics Institute) in the frame of a research on calorimetry and Dielectrometry of liquids and solids.

2001 winner of a temporary position as researcher at Istituto Nazionale Fisica della Materia (INFM, melted inside CNR in 2006) in a research group developing a Magneto Optical Trap of Francium atoms.

2008 permanent position as researcher at Istituto Nanoscienze – CNR.

2012 scientific coordinator of a LASERLAB-EUROPE (Q-switching laser sources of thulium doped LiLuF4 and BaY2F8 single crystals) project.

2016 Italian scientific coordinator of the project "Development of High Reliability Lasers at 461NM and 689NM (SR Lattice) and 422NM (Single trapped SR Ion)" ITT 1-8322/15/NL/RA funded by European Space Agency (ESA), contract n. 4000116340/16/NL/BJ

Stefano Veronesi has co-authored more than 70 papers. To date (November 2018) his papers have been cited over 950 times. h-index: 18.
