Recent theoretical advances for describing the all-optical spectroscopic technique of high-order harmonic generation in condensed matter systems is assessed. The theoretical methods for characterizing the underlying ultrafast electron processes, their beyond-electric-dipole interactions, and the presence of excitons will be discussed. With it, predictions are made regarding spectroscopic signatures of beyond-electric-dipole light-matter couplings, ultrafast exciton processes, as well as revealing ultrafast transitions between the underlying generation mechanisms.
