Title: Nonlinear Phononics

Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss how intense electromagnetic radiation at TeraHertz frequencies can be used to coherently drive the lattice of solids. I will discuss how the nonlinearity of the lattice results in a number of interesting phenomena in which energy flows between different normal modes, directed by the laser.
I will also discuss how such nonlinear phononics can be used to control the electronic properties of a material. I will finally report on a number of recent experiments in which coherent modulation of the lattice has been used to induce a mysterious non-equilibrium superconducting state at temperatures far in excess of the thermodynamic transition temperature Tc.
